Goals and Interests Statement Draft

Goals and Interests Statement Draft

Q It's time to create your first draft of your Statement of Goals and Interests. Where you might take some time to see sample statements of goals using a search engine like Google, you should keep in mind that our purpose is different than those. You are not writing this for a specific program or job application. For example, check out this search: https://www.google.com/search?q=statement+of+goals+and+interests+samples&tbm=isch&ved=2ahUKEwi9tKL9jaTuAhXBOM0KHTQZAvEQ2-cCegQIABAA&oq=statement+of+goals+and+interests+samples&gs_lcp=CgNpbWcQAzoECCMQJ1C-kBJY9cASYMHCEmgAcAB4AIABiQGIAf0KkgEEMjAuMZgBAKABAaoBC2d3cy13aXotaW1nwAEB&sclient=img&ei=nsYEYL1twfG0BrSyiIgP&bih=1042&biw=1428&rlz=1C5GCEM_enUS930US930&hl=en (Links to an external site.) You will see here that each of these is quite different in terms of purpose. However, you can imitate the genre and format. Audience • me and your peers in the classroom - we are a friendly, supportive audience who wants to learn about you Purpose • share a bit about who you are and what you would like to achieve in school or work or both, short and long term; reflect on and dig deeper into your motivations and aspirations Formatting • single-spaced paragraphs separate by extra space ("return") • headings -- some statements use heading to divide up key ideas and you might want to do the same • one-page in length Tone • respectful or professional • familiar and authentic -- your own voice • avoid slang and colloquialisms unless they are imbedded in a helpful anecdote Organization • consider the topic and purpose of each paragraph and stick to it • include enough paragraphs to cover everything, probably 4-5 Things to Cover in This Draft • a good idea of who you are • your interests • your goals (education or job or otherwise) - try to imagine a future scene: where are you? who are you with? what are you doing? how does it feel/ • some reflection on how your experiences and values relate to your larger goals Peer Feedback 1. When you respond to your peer's draft, please read it carefully and answer all of these questions (using the numbers in your response): 2. Do you get a sense of the writer's personality and core values? Write about what you discovered and note where this comes through most. If you aren't sure, this is a signal the writer might need to be more descriptive or explicit. Suggest where they might do that. 3. Comment on the overall structure and organization. Is the writer organizing this according to short or long term goals, educational goals, job or employment goals, personal goals, and/or something else? How can you tell? 4. Does each paragraph cover just one main idea? Is the idea stated clearly? Make a suggestion about what the main topics/paragraphs are. 5. What are the writer's top three interests? 6. What are the writer's top three goals? 7. What else do you wish you knew about the writer? 8. Do you have any suggestions about making this more creative, interesting, or fun? What are they? 9. Did you notice any grammar or punctuation errors that you think might inhibit readers from understanding what they meant? Give just one example. Please review two of your peers' posts, the one who posted before you and the one who posted after you. If you need to return to this discussion space in order to do so, please do, even if it's after the due date. Draft 20 points Review 15 points

When I think about my goals and interests, I always try to think about the different types of goals and interests that I have. It can be said that the goals and interests are different when it comes to personal life and professional life and I have learned that choosing the same goals for personal and professional lives can create problems; at least for me. I have also learned that having the same interests for both personal and professional lives on the other hand, can help to enjoy the professional life. My goals for my professional life are to have a steady career in which I am interested and also, to choose a career that will help me to have a secure future.
